Steve Read and Tim McCarthy have reached a mutual agreement that will see Steve take full ownership of the Top Fuel Dragster program. As part of this transition, the team formerly known as Read McCarthy Racing will now be known as Steve Read Racing. Tim McCarthy will dedicate his focus to a full-season campaign with his Valvoline Funny Car, driven by Chris Stipanovich.
Tim has been instrumental in bringing the Top Fuel program to fruition, supplying much of the running gear and equipment that made it possible for Steve to return to the track at the Winternationals in June, 2024. This decision reflects the natural evolution of their partnership as both racers pursue their individual priorities.
Steve Read expressed his appreciation for Tim’s contributions:
"Tim’s efforts have been crucial in turning this program from an idea into reality. I’m deeply grateful for his support and excited about the future ahead with Steve Read Racing. While our focus is shifting, our friendship and mutual respect remain strong. I wish Tim and Chris great success in their Funny Car campaign—it’s going to be an exciting season for us both."
Tim McCarthy also shared his thoughts:
"Steve and I have worked together with a shared vision, and this transition is simply the next step in that journey. I’m proud of the role I played in helping Steve get back on the track and equally excited to focus fully on the Valvoline Funny Car program with Chris. Our partnership has always been built on professionalism and respect, and that won’t change."
Both Steve Read Racing and McCarthy Racing will compete at the NDRC New Year Nitro round at Willowbank Raceway on January 10-11, 2025, kicking off the 2025 season in spectacular fashion.
